This cave bear tooth fossil is one of the more well preserved specimens available.
During the Pleistocene (Ice Age, 2.5 Mya to 11,700 YA), Cave Bears could be found across Europe and down to the Middle East. These mammals could weigh between 400-500 kgs and measure up to 3 meters long. In contrast to today's bears who only hibernate in caves, these bears would frequent caves earning them their name. Some fossilized teeth have nitrogen-15, indicating these large mammals were opportunistic omnivores. Scientists believe these bears were pushed to extinction by Neanderthals who also relied on cave dwellings.
