Age: The fossil bearing layers which reside up to 130 feet beneath the surface are represented by the Pungo River Formation (Miocene – 15 million years ago) and the Yorktown Formation (Pliocene – 4.5 million years ago)

These teeth were formerly called extinct Tiger sharks Galeocerdo contortus. Now the "aduncus" species teeth are thought to be upper jaw teeth and the "contortus" teeth are lower jaw teeth of  Physogaleus aduncus.

Since the mine is now inaccessible, the market is strictly limited to existing collections. This makes every Lee Creek fossil an appreciating asset. As time passes, their scarcity—and their value—only intensifies.
