Pterosaurs were the first flying vertebrates, inhabiting the Earth from the Late Triassic to the end of the Cretaceous (228–66 million years ago). These specialized, often fuzzy reptiles developed powerful flight using wings made of skin stretched between their bodies and a tremendously elongated fourth finger. They ranged in size from tiny sparrow-sized creatures to giants with 40-foot wingspans, such as Quetzalcoatlus
