The cave bear (Ursus spelaeus) was a massive, primarily herbivorous bear that inhabited Europe during the Pleistocene epoch until its extinction around 20,000–24,000 years ago. Comparable in size to modern polar or Kodiak bears, males weighed 350–600 kg (up to 1,000 kg) and measured over 2m in length. They were characterized by a steep, domed forehead, a heavy, muscular frame, and long, thick limbs.
