A posterior Megalodon tooth is a specialized tooth from the very back of the shark’s jaw. Unlike the large, triangular, symmetrical front teeth, posterior Megalodon teeth are small, wide, and significantly more curved or hooked in shape. They were used for holding and shredding prey rather than biting.
The largest fish that ever lived, the Megalodon (Carcharocles Megalodon), ruled the seas from the early Miocene Epoch until the end of the Pliocene Epoch (2.58 million years ago). With a bite several times larger than the current day shark, they measured up to 18 meters long and weighed up to 65 metric tons. The largest recovered Megalodon tooth measures 6.9 inches long, and distinctly has a dark chevron shape near the root.
