The name “Tylosaurus” means “knob lizard,” referring to the distinctive nob-like structure on the snout of some specimens. These knobs likely played a role in enhancing the reptile’s hydrodynamic efficiency or may have been involved in mating displays or species recognition.
Tylosaurus is among the largest known mosasaurs, with some specimens reaching lengths of up to 15 meters (49 feet) or more. They were apex predators in their marine ecosystems, preying on a variety of marine creatures, including fish, ammonites, other marine reptiles, and even smaller mosasaurs.
