Found: Lee creek mine, Aurora, north carolina, USA
Lee Creek Mine fossils (famously extracted from the phosphate deposits in Aurora, North Carolina) are expensive primarily because the site has been closed to public fossil collecting since 2008. This permanent halt to new legal extraction means no fresh supply is entering the market, driving up the value of existing specimens
The largest fish that ever lived, the Megalodon (Carcharocles Megalodon), ruled the seas from the early Miocene Epoch until the end of the Pliocene Epoch (2.58 million years ago). With a bite several times larger than the current day shark, they measured up to 18 meters long and weighed up to 65 metric tons. The largest recovered Megalodon tooth measures 6.9 inches long, and distinctly has a dark chevron shape near the root.
